Looking back at 2021

2021 sailed by in the blink of an eye and was not exactly what we expected it to be. Challenges were aplenty but I’m sure each and every one of us has learned and changed for the better as well as gained a newfound appreciation for the little things in life. In spite of the COVID-19 situation, BGC was privileged to support a wide range of nationwide initiatives to fulfill its obligations and responsibilities in line with the national objectives, working with various Government Ministries on Brunei Darussalam’s Energy Transition, Climate Change, Brunei Darussalam’s Chairmanship of ASEAN’s Business Investment Summit and Energy Business Forum, and many more. Through such collaborative undertakings, we believe that Brunei has made significant progress in addressing a diverse range of issues related to the environment, the economy, and most importantly, the development of human capital – which were largely affected by the COVID-19 pandemic. Importantly, BGC continued to deliver its obligations in delivering Brunei Darussalam’s precious LNG cargoes to her customers uninterrupted, cementing our reputation as a safe and reliable transporter of LNG. With COVID-19 being one of the major disruptors to shipping in 2021, BGC like many others has had to introduce additional safe measures in order to adapt to the ever-changing landscape. The enforced adoption of technologies and new ways of working also in hindsight accelerated BGC’s progress in its digital transformation and to be more innovative. It is therefore crucial for us to embrace challenges and turn them into opportunities by strategically investing in infrastructure, organisational development, and education for the present required skillsets and future-ready skills. As we bid farewell to 2021, we at Brunei Gas Carriers (BGC) would like to take this opportunity to wish everyone a happy and safe new year ahead. We hope that you will enjoy the holiday season with your family. Please continue to observe the existing SOPs. May the new year bring joy, happiness and prosperity to all. Stay strong, stay calm, and stay safe! #bruneimaritime #bruneigascarriers #bruneishipping

Braving the sea in pandemic times

Navigating through the pandemic landscape has not been easy. Heightened measures and travel restrictions have implicated the maritime industry, resulting in lengthier tours and difficulties in relieving people on time. In a recent interview, our people tell the story of what it is like to brave the seas during these challenging times, and spoke of the importance of mental resilience to cope with the resurgence of the COVID-19 outbreak. At Brunei Gas Carriers (BGC), the safety and wellbeing of our seafarers will always be our top priority. Through the establishment of our COVID-19 task force, we ensure that all standard operating procedures (SOPs) align with the latest guidelines provided by the Ministry of Health (MoH), Ministry of Energy (ME), Maritime and Port Authority of Brunei Darussalam (MPABD) as well as the country requirements of the ports that the vessels frequent internationally. As Brunei Darussalam gradually enters the endemic phase, we expect to see the easing of measures and travel restrictions to allow for timely repatriation. Nevertheless, we will continue to remain vigilant by upholding our safety measures and heeding the authorities to ensure the safety and wellbeing of our people. Stay calm, stay strong, and stay safe. This year, BGC also celebrated and bid farewell to its first retiree – Awang Hj Maidin bin Hj Sabtu who was BGC’s Ship Admin Officer for the past 15 years.

In his opening remarks, BGC Managing Director, Pg Shamhary Pg Dato Paduka Hj Mustapha thanked the LSA recipients for their unwavering service and dedication to the company all these years – “On behalf of BGC, I wish to express my heartfelt appreciation to each one of you for all your hard work, dedication, and sacrifice for the company, for you have been an invaluable asset to BGC. The company’s successes and achievements would not have been possible without your wisdom, support, resilience, and most importantly, your loyalty.”

Despite the current situation, it was important for the company to be able to continue honouring the LSA recipients. Pg Shamhary, in his speech, also mentioned, “BGC, together with its people, is constantly adapting to the demands of the shipping industry as demonstrated by our resilience in managing our shipping operations throughout the COVID-19 pandemic. Our feats have been nothing short of spectacular”.

“Alhamdulillah, we have continued to uphold our reputation as a safe and reliable operator during these difficult times and we should be proud of it, even though it may come with the price of long tours for our seafarers. This is certainly not an ideal situation, and as much as we may not like it and would prefer to avoid it as much as possible – this is where our professionalism is tested, and I believe we are all great professionals and can overcome it.”

Recipients were presented with an LSA gift as well as a special commissioned watercolour painting of BGC A-Class vessels, which were handed over by BGC’s Managing Director.

ASEAN BIS 2021

Brunei Gas Carriers (BGC), as one of the Gold Sponsors of the @aseanbis, is proud to support ASEAN’s role in building a sustainable digital future and addressing the widespread impact of COVID-19 on people’s lives and livelihoods across SE Asia. In this year’s ABIS 2021, BGC’s Managing Director, Pg Shamhary Pg Dato Hj Mustapha, was honored to be a part of the esteemed panel to discuss key ideas and solutions to help advance ASEANS’s digital economy aspirations. From an industry and business perspective, Pg Shamhary conveyed that “technological advancements had always played a key role in ensuring business sustainability through increasing productivity and output, reducing our environmental impacts, and transforming the way we work.” With COVID-19 being one of the major disruptors to shipping, BGC like many others has had to adapt to the ever-changing landscape, through enforced adoption of new technologies and ways of working – which in hindsight has accelerated BGC’s progress in its digital transformation roadmap. In addressing the challenges brought about by the pandemic, BGC believes that businesses must strategically invest in infrastructure and education for the required skillsets and future-ready skills. Businesses must also learn to understand how technology and digital economy is reshaping their comparative advantage for business sustainability. Last but not least, Governments and Policymakers need to protect citizens from potential disruptions and populations from being disenfranchised, and learn to manage disruptive change and technological developments through a governance framework. While we can agree that digital integration and adoption have enabled ASEAN to remain agile and resilient, ASEAN must consider reshaping the digital ecosystem, by building an inclusive digital infrastructure, promoting inclusive digital literacy and most importantly, boost the digital readiness of businesses to ensure the successful adoption of digital technologies despite the challenging pandemic landscape. #bruneigascarriers #bruneimaritime #bruneishipping #ASEANBIS2021 #wecareweprepareweprosper
