Day Of The Seafarer

Day of the Seafarer is a special day for all of us here working in the maritime industry—a day dedicated to our esteemed colleagues who are out at sea, to recognise and celebrate their sacrifices in ensuring the safe and timely delivery of our LNG cargoes to Brunei Darussalam’s international customers.

In 2022, with the theme “Your voyage—then and now, share your journey,” we organised an interview with two of our most seasoned seafarers, one who joined the company as the first intake of the BGC Cadetship Programme back in year 2000 and another who joined as the fourth intake back in 2003. Fast-forward to today, we are very proud to have played an instrumental part in their achievements as they currently form part of our backbone in BGC, with Pg Nor Hazman bin Pg Haji Abdul Hamid serving as the Acting Fleet Manager, and Captain Mohammad Shazelli bin Haji Damon, one of six BGC Fleet Captains. Do catch their informative stories on today’s Borneo Bulletin newspaper.

BGC’s Acting Managing Director, Captain Mateen bin Abdurrahman Liew, also a proud member of BGC’s first cadetship intake recalls on his earlier days working in the maritime industry back in the early 2000s, saying, “A lot of us came a long way, starting our careers over two decades ago. There were no “Day of the Seafarer” celebrations then to commemorate and recognise the invaluable contributions made by seafarers to the world. It was only in 2011, that the maritime industry led by IMO, made it to the annual list of United Nations Annual Observances.

‘Your voyage – then and now, share your journey’ for me is about how much times have changed over the period, for the better i.e., safety standards, welfare, terms & conditions, communications. There are some things that haven’t changed significantly from when I first started i.e., shore leave restrictions or tour lengths, but we are making steps to address this.”

To all our BGC family out at sea and to those currently onshore, we wish you a Happy Day of the Seafarer!

BRUNEI MYCE @ CLIMATE CHANGE WEEK

Brunei Gas Carriers (BGC) kicked off the Climate Change Week @bruneimyce by launching its Clean Rivers, Clean Seas campaign, with the theme “Sustaining A Cleaner and Greener Future.”

BGC, in collaboration with @greenbrunei , are working together to support the Brunei Darussalam National Council on Climate Change’s target to increase carbon sink through planting 500,000 trees by 2035 under its Clean Rivers, Clean Seas campaign. Over the next four days, visitors at the BGC booth can take part in the Clean Rivers, Clean Seas campaign by adopting a tree sapling provided by Green Brunei.

We are happy to announce that a total of 185 tree saplings have already been adopted by the public on our opening day. Do not worry as we still have plenty more up for grabs.

So do stop by our booth from today, 22nd June 2022, until Saturday, 25th June 2022 to take part in our Clean Rivers, Clean Seas campaign. We look forward to seeing you there.

Let us work together “towards a low carbon and climate-resilient nation.”

Farewell ABADI

On June 20, 2022, BGC bid a final farewell to its longest serving A-Class vessel, the S.S. Abadi, before she returns to her new owner next month.

The sale of S.S. Abadi comes as part of BGC’s long-term strategy to move away from steam-operated vessels in favour of greener and more fuel-efficient motor-operated vessels amidst on-going regulatory pressure to reduce greenhouse gas pollutants and our vessels’ carbon footprint.

With a heavy heart, we bid farewell to a vessel that not only symbolises BGC but also the Nation as it has in so many ways contributed to Brunei’s economy, spreading knowledge and experience of our bustling Bruneian talent over the past 20 years.

To all those who have served onboard the Abadi past and present, we wish to thank you for your contributions, and to the Abadi, Selamat Jalan, we wish you fair winds and following seas.

World Environment Day 2022

2022 marks a historic milestone, 50 years since the 1972 Stockholm Conference. Today, our green planet is battling multiple crises from climate change, to loss of biodiversity, and an increase in carbon emissions. In conjunction with World Environment Day, it is important for all of us to treat the crises seriously because we have #OnlyOneEarth. Let us do our part by making sustainable living the ‘default’ option, to live in harmony with nature, and shift from harming the planet to healing the planet. We have #OnlyOneEarth. Let’s take care of it. BGC… Shipping Energy First-Class #bruneimaritime #bruneigascarriers #bruneishipping
