BGC Donates 50 Trees in Support of Climate Change Agenda

On 13th August 2022, Brunei Gas Carriers (BGC) took part in the Tree Planting Ceremony, held in conjunction with the launch of the Atmosphiere Mobile Application (Tree Planting Application), organised by Shell LiveWIRE Brunei and Sphiere Sdn Bhd. BGC’s Managing Director, Captain Abdul Mateen Abdurrahman Liew, who took part in the tree planting activity expressed that the launch of the Atmosphiere mobile application is a real game-changer for the country, as it grants users of the mobile app the convenience to subscribe to a tree planting service and directly contribute to the national target set by the Brunei Climate Change Secretariat (BCCS) to plant 500,000 trees by 2035. Another feature that users can benefit from is the ability to track their carbon emissions, enabling them to make better decisions and contribute towards a greener future for the country. The launch of the Atmosphiere mobile app certainly complements BGC’s Clean Rivers, Clean Seas campaign, as we can leverage on the extensive features available on the app to collaborate on future campaigns and contribute towards the BNCCP Strategy 2’s national objective. BGC through the tree planting ceremony, donated a total of 50 trees in support of this important cause. Let’s all work together and start planting a tree today because #SustainingACleanerAndGreenerFuture is a collective responsibility. #CleanRiversCleanSeas #BruneiShipping #BruneiMaritime

BGC Re-Connect After Covid-19

BGC resumed its face-to-face networking session with its employees for the first time since the COVID-19 outbreak. The event took place at Tarindak D’Seni, last Tuesday, 26th July 2022.

Present to partake in the BGC Connect were members of the management team led by the Managing Director, Captain Abdul Mateen bin Abdurrahman Liew. In his opening remarks, Captain Abdul Mateen expressed the importance of adapting to change, in response to the ever-challenging maritime landscape which has been impacted by geo-political tensions, disruptions to supply and demand, and most importantly COVID-19. He thanked each and every one of our heroes for sustaining an excellent record through safe and timely delivery of precious LNG cargoes to Brunei’s international customers.

One of the highlights from BGC Connect included a teambuilding session based on the lean concept of continuous improvement, where four teams competed with one another to build the best ‘miniature bridge’ with unlimited resources. In the afternoon, BGC also launched a new Health & Wellness campaign to cater to the wellbeing of BGC employees, and promote the importance of maintaining a healthy lifestyle.

The networking session concluded with an open mic session followed by a launch of the company’s first ever BGC Olympics.

Selamat Hari Raya Aidiladha

Hari Raya Aidiladha, also known as the ‘Feast of Sacrifice’, is an important celebration in Islam which takes place on the 10th of Zulhijjah in remembrance of Prophet Ibrahim’s devout loyalty and obedience to Allah SWT, also coinciding with the final day of the annual Muslim holy pilgrimage.

As we celebrate Hari Raya Aidiladha this year, let us also not forget about safety – our own safety and those around us. If you are visiting family members, do not forget to plan your journey; remember to wear your seat belt and adhere to the speed limits. Practice moderation with the abundant food on offer, lock your doors and remember to make time for Doa. Last but not least, please continue to adhere to the latest COVID-19 SOPs by ensuring that you wear your mask when indoors and most importantly, remember to conduct ART before visiting family members.

On behalf of BGC Management and staff, we wish all our Muslim brothers and sisters around the world a Selamat Hari Raya Aidiladha.

Day Of The Seafarer

Day of the Seafarer is a special day for all of us here working in the maritime industry—a day dedicated to our esteemed colleagues who are out at sea, to recognise and celebrate their sacrifices in ensuring the safe and timely delivery of our LNG cargoes to Brunei Darussalam’s international customers.

In 2022, with the theme “Your voyage—then and now, share your journey,” we organised an interview with two of our most seasoned seafarers, one who joined the company as the first intake of the BGC Cadetship Programme back in year 2000 and another who joined as the fourth intake back in 2003. Fast-forward to today, we are very proud to have played an instrumental part in their achievements as they currently form part of our backbone in BGC, with Pg Nor Hazman bin Pg Haji Abdul Hamid serving as the Acting Fleet Manager, and Captain Mohammad Shazelli bin Haji Damon, one of six BGC Fleet Captains. Do catch their informative stories on today’s Borneo Bulletin newspaper.

BGC’s Acting Managing Director, Captain Mateen bin Abdurrahman Liew, also a proud member of BGC’s first cadetship intake recalls on his earlier days working in the maritime industry back in the early 2000s, saying, “A lot of us came a long way, starting our careers over two decades ago. There were no “Day of the Seafarer” celebrations then to commemorate and recognise the invaluable contributions made by seafarers to the world. It was only in 2011, that the maritime industry led by IMO, made it to the annual list of United Nations Annual Observances.

‘Your voyage – then and now, share your journey’ for me is about how much times have changed over the period, for the better i.e., safety standards, welfare, terms & conditions, communications. There are some things that haven’t changed significantly from when I first started i.e., shore leave restrictions or tour lengths, but we are making steps to address this.”

To all our BGC family out at sea and to those currently onshore, we wish you a Happy Day of the Seafarer!
